Jesus Christ, also known as Jesus of Nazareth, is the central figure of Christianity and a first-century Jewish teacher from Roman-ruled Palestine.[2][6] Most scholars agree that he was a historical person, a Galilean Jew active in a time of intense religious and political expectation.[2][5] He is believed to have been born around 6–4 BCE, traditionally in Bethlehem, and raised in Nazareth.[4][6] As an adult, Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist and began a public ministry around age 30.[2][3] He taught about the kingdom of God, called disciples, and became known as a preacher and healer.[1][6] His teaching emphasized repentance, love of God and neighbor, care for the poor, and moral transformation, and he often used parables to convey his message.[2][6] The Gospels and later Christian tradition portray him in several notable roles: **teacher and prophet**, **miracle worker**, **Messiah (Christ)**, and, for most Christians, the **Incarnation of God** and **Savior** whose death and resurrection bring salvation.[3][6] Historically, there is near-universal scholarly agreement on two key events in his life: his **baptism** and his **crucifixion under the Roman governor Pontius Pilate** around 30 CE in Jerusalem.[2][6] His followers soon came to believe he rose from the dead and appeared to them, a conviction that drove the spread of the early Christian movement.[1][6][7] Jesus’ “achievements,” in historical terms, include founding or inspiring a religious movement that became Christianity, which has profoundly shaped global history, ethics, art, and culture.[6][7] He remains religiously central to Christians worldwide and is also recognized as a prophet in Islam and an important moral teacher in many secular contexts. His life and message continue to be discussed in contemporary theology, historical research on the “historical Jesus,” interfaith dialogue, and debates about ethics and social justice.[2][5][6]
